3 Frequently Asked Questions
A PV plant has a lifespan of 25 to 35 years. Modules are typically warranted for 25 years at 80% of initial output. Inverters have a shorter lifespan (10–15 years) and need replacement. With proper maintenance, plants can produce beyond 30 years.
The energy payback time (EPBT) is 1 to 3 years depending on technology and location. A panel installed in France repays the energy needed for its manufacture in about 2 years, then produces "net" energy for 23+ years.
Panels still produce under cloudy skies (diffuse light), but less. Intermittency is managed through: battery storage, geographic diversification, complementary sources (wind, hydro, gas), and demand-side flexibility.
In Europe, the WEEE directive mandates recycling. 95% of materials are recoverable: glass, aluminium, silicon, copper. Specialized recycling schemes exist (Soren/PV Cycle in France). The cost is included via an eco-contribution at purchase.
